Sir – I appreciated the picture of the lovely old City of Oxford Motor Services’ bus in last week’s issue, but it was incorrect to call it a Routemaster. Not all red double-deck buses are Routemasters, which are London buses.
However, there is a link, in that the Oxford bus and the Routemasters were all manufactured, wholly or partly, by the sadly now defunct AEC company of Southall, Middlesex. AEC was famously the builder of London’s buses but supplied quite a few to Oxford as well. British engineering at its best! Yes, I know, I should get out more.
