IN response to A Parker’s letter (December 27), I would like to assure the writer that the RSPCA certainly does use the generous donations it receives for caring for sick and abandoned animals and for preventing cruelty.

The writer says they recently heard a report about the approximately 7,000 horses potentially at risk over the winter. This was a joint report from the RSPCA, and five other equine welfare charities, into the dire situation facing horses across England and Wales as they are left to breed indiscriminately and without food, water and veterinary care when it is needed.

We all work to safeguard the welfare of these horses, to advise owners and to raise awareness of the welfare problems that rising feed prices and irresponsible ownership can bring.

In addition, the RSPCA alone has more than 800 horses in its care, despite having just 100 spaces in its equine centres. This means that we fund the feeding, boarding and veterinary care of those horses.

We can only do this with the help of our supporters for which we are extremely grateful.
