The mayor, Keith Stone, centre, joined young people on a New Year’s Day walk in 1987 to raise money for St John Ambulance and check on the state of local footpaths. The annual walk, which took the party through local villages, had been introduced by former mayor Ernest Crapper in 1979.
An advice and neighbourhood centre opened in the Methodist Church in Burford Road in 1984. The Methodist minister, the Rev Ian Roach, and volunteers decided to set up the centre to save residents having to travel to Witney and Oxford for help. Deputy mayor Mary Johnson performed the official opening.
The town’s carnival and gala day in 1977 included a one-mile, traffic-stopping procession of nearly 50 floats, with TV personality Keith Chegwin and Carterton Silver Jubilee Queen Tracey Soanes riding on a double-decker bus. There was also an air display, horticultural show and art exhibition. Pictured enjoying the revelry are Elaine Orr, five, and her sister Elaine, four.
