Thirteen villagers strode out on a 12-mile hike from the Bowyer Arms to Oxford city centre and back in 1983, the village’s traditional Good Friday event. They raised £103, a record in the walk’s 20-year history, to take members of the Darby and Joan Club on a summer outing and to give them a Christmas dinner.
Choristers at St James Church worked their way through the English Hymnal in a 12-hour sponsored sing in 1985. Extra organists and pianists were drafted in as the singers worked a shift system throughout the day from 9am. The event helped the church to clear debts after it had spent £30,000 on an activities and social room.
Miss Piggy and Noddy brought a touch of colour to the village school’s fair in 1981. They joined a Scots piper, a pony and trap and a new fire engine in a fancy dress procession through the village in the rain. The fair was held to raise money for school funds.
