It was a hot day as two shirtless men handled this huge bell, one of six, the largest weighing more than a ton, lowered from the tower of All Saints Church in 1983. The tower was undergoing a major overhaul and the bells were being taken away for repair and tuning. It was the first time the bells had been removed since they were installed in 1778. Pictured with the bell are Brian White, left, of White’s, the bell hanging firm from Appleton, and Hugh Datson, son of churchwarden Bob Datson.
A delightful village scene, with horses and carts, in 1955. Note the children in the bottom right of picture.
The village won the Marlborough Trophy in Oxfordshire’s Best-Kept Village competition in 1970 and Lord Saye and Sele, right, unveiled the plaque. On the left is Mr C M Edgington, chairman of the parish council and in the background smiling spectators.
