ILLEGAL parking in Wantage has prompted calls for Oxfordshire County Council to bring in additional parking attendants.
Drivers are repeatedly flouting yellow lines on Wallingford Street and Newbury Street in the town centre.
Wantage Town Council says enforcement is the county council’s responsibility, but is not being carried out, while Vale of White Horse District Council has refused to pay for enforcement because of the cost.
Wantage MP Ed Vaizey recently visited the town with Thame Valley Police and Crime Commissioner Anthony Stansfeld, who promised to tackle the issue.
And on Saturday for the first time Police Community Support Officers started dishing out parking tickets.
The town council has said it will wait to see what effect this has.
Town and county councillor Jenny Hannaby said: “Oxfordshire County Council has the responsibility to monitor car parking on all county council streets but they are refusing to do it. They say the district council should do it but they won’t take it on. The problem is getting worse no doubt — we need traffic wardens.”
