I HAVE only just realised what a remarkable and incredible country and county, run by equally remarkable and incredible politicians, we live in.
It appears to be a foregone conclusion that HS2 will go ahead costing at least £40bn, David Cameron, on behalf of our government, has given £50m in aid to the Philippines. Our local councils have agreed to pay £45m towards the east-west rail link, Oxford City Council plans to spend £20m on regenerating Blackbird Leys. At the same time the Government is telling us that due to the financial problems facing this country it must make cuts to save money and in turn, our councils tell us that due to government spending cuts they must also save money by cutting services to those in most need and least able to afford these cuts.
This being the case, then could someone tell us where all this money they are spending, or giving away, is coming from? It would appear that when politicians want to make a name for themselves locally, nationally or internationally they can suddenly find the money at the bottom of their empty cash box.
How long before they begin talking about their own pay rise again? Not long I fear.
