Sir – RAF Croughton and RAF Barford St John are, as the name implies, British, not American bases (Letters, September 26) and having existed for more than 75 years, no secret to anyone.
All countries with the capability, monitor satellite communications from their own or others’ territory and then share their knowledge through organisations such as NATO.
This is a perfectly normal procedure, with the monitored information being used as national governments deem appropriate to secure the safety and well-being of their inhabitants and those of the wider world.
Either way, it is a matter for governments, not bases, so if Ms Gill has issue with that, it would make more sense for her to take her picnic to Downing Street, or the White House lawn, rather than disturbing the good folk and sheep of Croughton.
