Celebrities including Jude Law have joined a protest to free Greenpeace activists charged with piracy by Russia, which include a West Oxfordshire campaigner.

Phil Ball, from Chipping Norton, was part of a 30-strong crew on a ship belonging to the charity, which was protesting against oil drilling in the Arctic.

The crew was arrested in September after two of the activists tried to board an oil platform owned by the Russian energy company Gazprom.

Mr Ball was one of 14 charged with piracy by the Russians in Murmansk and faces a potential 15-year prison sentence in Russia.

Actors Imelda Staunton and Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter and Mr Law, and Blur frontman Damon Albarn, joined crowds of hundreds of around 800 demonstrating in London against the charges.

They gathered outside Russia’s embassy in London on Saturday.
