JOHN Hampden School at Thame transformed itself into a Victorian institution, complete with rows of bench desks, oil lamps and the cane, to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 1987.
Pupils and staff went to school in Victorian costume and the day started with a register lineup and drill. Pupils sat in their classrooms in straight lines and when the sun went down, oil lamps were lit. School lunch was as near Victorian fare as possible – bangers, mash and mushy peas, with spotted dick for pudding.
