A CARE home could be built on the site of a closed Bicester pub, raising concerns about the effect on traffic and parking.

London’s Liborate Limited wants to flatten the Centurion pub for a new care home for dementia patients.

The pub has 50 parking spaces and the care home would have 12 spaces, a disabled and ambulance bay and 12 cycle spaces.

The developer claims there are 34 on-street parking spaces nearby and a car park at the Clifton Centre, the Scout headquarters and St John Ambulance centre.

But residents fear the road could become an overspill for care home visitors and staff.

A planning application has now been submitted to Cherwell District Council, which will make the final decision.

The application says the home would create 10 full time and 40 part-time jobs.

Resident Donald Robinson said it is “the most brazen cheek I have ever seen from a developer in a planning application”.

He is among a dozen residents who have written to the council to oppose the plan over its size and parking.

Carol Allen, 57, of Ashdene Road, said she was “incensed” by the “audacity” of the developer’s transport plan.

She added: “It’s a brazen cheek to think they can park on this street when they don’t live here.

“The fact that there’s going to be different shift workers means 25 people on shift and at cross-over times there’s going to be more than that, which means cars driving up and down the street, presumably in the early hours.”

She added: “We’re all more or less agreed we would like it to be a smaller home, with proper parking facilities.”

Transport surveys from 7.15am to 10.15am recorded that no vehicles parked in the car park opposite. But residents say the spaces are used by churchgoers, footballers, Scouts and other groups.

Bicester Town Council is opposing the scheme over its size and parking spaces.

Town, district and county councillor Les Sibley said: “For the developer to suggest that staff and visitors could park their cars in the adjoining roads is ludicrous.”

Liborate refused to comment.
