IT WAS yellow fever at the weekend when hundreds turned out to support a fun day to raise cash to buy a new Oxford United player.

The event was hosted by fans’ group the Yellow Army, at the U’s training ground in Roman Way, Horspath Road, Cowley, and up to 200 people went along.

Oxford United Milk Cup legend Dave Langan stayed behind for the fundraiser after earlier handing over his player’s medals to the care of the supporters’ group.

Yellows fans raised more than £5,000 to buy the former full-back’s Milk Cup and League Two winners’ medals, which will be kept at the Kassam Stadium for posterity.

Mr Langan was forced to sell his home after suffering financial problems and plans to use the money raised to buy a mobile home.

Yellow Army treasurer Trevor Lambert said: “He’s enormously appreciative of it. There was a tear in his eye.”

He said Mr Langan’s career ended before footballers made thousands of pounds from sponsorship deals.

Mr Lambert said: “Regrettably he’s one of those people who had a good career but didn’t benefit financially from it.

“He played for three years in that division and never made any money except wages.”

After Saturday’s match, Mr Langan mingled with party- goers, many of whom thanked him for what he did for the club between 1984 to 1986.

Mr Lambert believes the 12th Man fund, which was set up to help buy a new player in January, could be boosted by £2,000 to £3,000 from the event. The group has set itself a £20,000 target.

Among the guests was Michael Downer with son Kieron, 11, who got a U’s football signed by the team and Charlotte Nott, five, who had fun on the dance floor.

The Horspath Primary School pupil lost the lower parts of her arms and legs to meningitis as a baby.

Mum Jenny Daniels said: “We had a great time and are always happy to support Oxford United. They have always been great towards us as a family.

“Charlotte was the life and soul of the party. She danced for one-and-a-half hours.”

As well as a disco, there was a six-a-side football match, barbecue, auction, fun casino and bouncy castle. Future 12th Man fundraisers include a Christmas raffle and walk. To get involved contact Mr Lambert via http://www.trev.lambert@gmail.com
