A SMILE and a wave from old soldiers of the 43rd Royal Marine Commandos, who held a reunion in Oxford in 1979.

They met at the Oxford Europa Lodge at Wolvercote roundabout and their guests included three generals and a Yugoslav admiral.

Eighty members of the unit, which fought in Yugoslavia and Italy from 1943 to 1945, were present. They included Colonel ‘Bonzo’ Simonds, its first commander.

The unit was involved in much daring action during the Anzio landings, the Allies’ amphibious attack on German forces in Italy, and later in the Adriatic.
