TEACHERS went on strike – and so did the pupils!
Some staff walked out of Bartholomew School at Eynsham in 1985 during a pay dispute with the Government.
And 200 pupils were so frustrated that their lessons were being disrupted that they walked out too. But while the teachers faced no penalty, the youngsters were told they faced suspension unless they returned to their classrooms.
The pupils’ action was branded irresponsible and immature by headmaster, David Clarke.
But one rebel pupil said: “We are fed up with the continual disruption to our lessons. The more we miss, the harder it will be to catch up.
“We have twice been sent home and have been told the strike action will continue. We want it to stop.”
Another said: “There’s not much sympathy for the teachers’ case. We think they have been offered quite good money and don’t see why they should take it out on us.”
