A statue has been unveiled of the founder of the Paralympic Games, who fled to Oxford to escape the Nazi holocaust.
A life-sized bronze statue of Sir Ludwig ‘Poppa’ Guttmann was unveiled outside the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital on Thursday.
Prof Guttmann held the first Paralympic event at the opening of the London Games in 1948.
The Jewish neurologist, who died in 1980, lived in Lonsdale Road North Oxford after fleeing Nazi Germany with his family.
