THEIR eyes first met on Valentine’s Day in an Oxford classroom during the Second World War.
Today, Peter and Diana Humphries celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary.
Mrs Humphries, 86, said: “I’m somewhat amazed it’s been 65 years.
“When we met (aged 14) we realised we had the same sense of humour.
“Peter is a very, very caring man.”
The couple, who live in Parks Close, Cutteslowe, met at the Oxford School of Technology, Art and Commerce in 1940 when Mrs Humphries was studying art and Mr Humphries was studying engineering.
They lost contact after finishing the two-year courses, but when Mr Humphries was about to go to Sri Lanka, Singapore and Borneo as a trainee mechanic in the Royal Navy in 1943, he asked Mrs Humphries to write to him.
The romance blossomed and the couple married at St Aldate’s Church, Oxford, on August 28, 1948, two years after he returned from the war.
They have three daughters, Anne, 57, Sally, 54, and Jill, 47, and eight grandchildren.
Mr Humphries first worked as an apprentice at Morris radiators and later at W Lucy and Co switchgear and lighting manufacturer in Jericho from 1946 and 1956.
In 1956 he worked at Harwell UKAEA until his retirement in 1988.
His wife worked in a post office drawing office in St Aldate’s and left after 10 years to have children.
Mr Humphries said the secret to their marriage is “sharing and sharing alike.”
He said: “There are the good times and the hard times – you have to learn to get over the hard times.”
One of their daughters, Sally Mulholland, from Radley, said her parents are an “inspiration” for married couples.
She said: “Sixty five years is an amazing achievement.”
Mr and Mrs Humphries celebrate their anniversary today with a Champagne breakfast and dinner out, and a family gathering on Saturday.
