VOLUNTEERS lent a hand to help to keep the county’s 3,000-year-old white horse bright and clean.

The National Trust asked for people to come and help chalk the ancient figure on White Horse Hill near Uffington.

Volunteers were also asked to weed the area in the event on Sunday and yesterday.

National Trust site ranger Andy Foley said there was a good turn out with everyone from the under fives to pensioners coming up to help out.

He said: “The only thing that holds us back is we haven’t got enough tools for all the hands.”

He said it took 4,000 hours to chalk the horse every year.

But he said it was a rewarding job, adding: “It is not often you get the opportunity to work with a 3,000 year old horse.

“You go away with a good feeling. “Here you can actually see what you have done with your hands and that’s very rewarding.

“We have had lovely weather up here and views to the Cotswolds and Chilterns.”
