Sir – I am very happy for Christopher Gray (Gray Matter, August 15). He lives close to Oxford station, travels off-peak, and plans his trips online well in advance.
However, the train, the fares and the relative inaccessibility of Oxford station do not suit everyone living a bit further afield, and if there were no coaches, the trains would be even more overcrowded for last-minute travellers.
Mr Gray calls the Thornhill facility ‘cheap London parking’, but if it is the ‘cheap’ that he objects to, the answer is indeed to charge for parking (as I hinted in my letter of August 8 in response to Graham Jones’s earlier letter of August 1). Mr Gray needs to look beyond his own personal concerns.
Don Manley, Oxford
