Sir – It was refreshing to read a realistic assessment of renewable energy in the letter from Michael Tyce (Letters, July 25).
It was in sharp contrast with the usual Green party line quoted in the article by MEP Keith Taylor (Opinion, July 25) that “the Government should tap the ‘truly’ renewable power sources from the sun, wind and sea”.
The truth is that although we might well get a warm feeling from seeing these sources harnessed, they are hugely expensive and as Michael Tyce pointed out, each of us will be funding the required subsidies via our electricity bills.
On a personal note, I think that if one goes by the website artist impressions, the Abbey Meadows hydro project in Abingdon will end up as a massive eyesore. For this reason the planning application should be rejected.
