Sir – In 1849, John Ruskin wrote: ‘When we build, let us think that we build for ever’ (The Seven Lamps of Architecture, chapter 6).

In the case of the University Museum with which he was so closely associated, that is fine, but for the hideous gulag-type blocks on the edge of Port Meadow we can only hope they won’t last for ever.

An assurance from the city’s planning committees that the designers and architects responsible for these blocks will never again be allowed anywhere near Oxford’s precious green spaces would be welcome by many.
