BEHIND THE SHUTTER: Long live film! I really miss the smell of film. There was nothing like putting a fresh roll in your camera, taking the pictures and waiting in anticipation in a darkroom as they developed before your eyes. One look at the turnout last Friday at the Ashmolean Museum and it is obvious I am not the only one who appreciates analogue. Jon Lewis captured Simon Murison-Bowie with his classic Rolleiflex and images behind him. Just look in Simon’s eyes and you know he has plenty of stories to tell.

WHAT GOES UP: The Riverside Festival at Charlbury last weekend was a huge success. On Monday you saw a picture of these young people making a human pyramid. What you didn’t see is this image, three seconds later, when the pyramid collapsed amid shrieks and giggles. Mark Hemsworth’s quick shutter caught them on their way down.

BRIGHT SIDE: Sharp-eyed photographer Jon Lewis took a beautiful landscape in between jobs on Sunday near Duns Tew. He noticed the clouds going over the hills and how the sun was highlighting the field of poppies and pasture beyond.  He stopped his car on a grass verge, grabbed the long lens and waited for the next cloud to pass. Snap!

DEFINING MOMENT: Euton Daley director of the Pegasus Theatre, addressed his friends and colleagues during the party to mark his retirement on Friday lasst week. Photographer Greg Blatchford used rim light to separate Euton from the background while the negative space balances the picture.

ONE DAY...: Five-year-old Thomas Newby looks longingly from his pedal car at the “American Giant”, one of the many cars on show at the Rally of the Giants at Blenheim Palace on Sunday. You can see the wheels in his head turning as he figures out how many years he will have to wait until he can drive a beast like this Dodge. Jon Lewis’s excellent composition creates an early 50s “Americana” feel, hinting at the car’s size and providing all the details in the background.
