Sir – I like the student flats being built in Roger Dudman Way. They are smart and well set out.
From the Walton Well Bridge side, the project promises a sense of style and elegance when completed. The impact on the Port Meadow side does, however, need to be softened.
Currently, from Port Meadow the buildings are largely obscured by trees, which are flourishing after being cut back two years ago.
When their leaves fall, dark conifers would look very fine against the white buildings, especially in the low winter sunlight. Nature and large buildings set back have co-existed in harmony for over 100 years in the north-east corner of both the Jephson Gardens in Leamington Spa and Hyde Park in London.
However, in both sites there is evidence of calm reflection and fine-tuning as the visual interchange between natural screening and the buildings has been developed. This is perhaps the way forward for the Oxford site.
