Sir – Ralph Ingham-Johnson suggests (Letters, July 11) testing the proposed Shores Green junction upgrade, on the A40 east of Witney, by crossing over the A40 on the existing farm bridge to the east.
Unconfident drivers, or those in small cars, will, he says, be intimidated by the dual carriageway, and won’t use it.
Just so: this is precisely why a proper junction upgrade is needed. But he seems also to be under the misapprehension that the upgraded junction is to provide a better route to the centre of Witney.
Quite the reverse: the proposed upgrade would remove the through traffic, the long-distance drivers who have no need nor desire to go into the town centre. With the through traffic removed, the local drivers, for whom Mr Ingham-Johnson is concerned, will have a safer, quicker and more pleasant journey ino the town along the existing route.
Dr Katy Jennison, Witney
