Last Friday, July 19, saw the completion of the annual Swan Upping in Abingdon.

But in spite of the beautiful weather sadly this year very few gathered to observe this historic and colourful ceremony as The Queen’s Swan Marker and the members of the Worshipful Company of Vintners and the Worshipful Company of Dyers, dressed in their splendid scarlet and blue outfits, stood to attention in their six traditional rowing skiffs under Abingdon Bridge and drank a toast to Her Majesty.

Abingdonians are rightfully proud of their town’s rich history and tradition. Having recently restored its name to Abingdon-on-Thames, it is disappointing that one of the most historic and colourful ceremonies on the river, dating back to the 12th century, is not marked more appropriately in Abingdon.

Notices can be put up to advertise the weekly farmers’ market, etc. but no signs appeared to publicise this annual event. Why were there no members of the council on hand to greet the Swan Uppers at the end of their five-day journey up river from Sunbury-on-Thames after undertaking this impressive and important task? Hopefully we can do better next year.
