THE heat is lovely and, after so many drab, damp days over the past couple of years, everyone should absolutely be out to enjoy proper summer days.

We don’t wish to jinx it, but given the weather for the past couple of weeks and the forecast to come, this might be one of those summers where golden memories are made.

But what we don’t want is those memories to be bad ones for an unlucky few.

Today we report appeals by the authorities for people not to jump off bridges on our rivers because of the unseen dangers lurking below the water.

We don’t wish to come across all ‘Grumpy Old Men’ but it is sound advice that people should take due regard of.

To demand everyone ignores the temptation would be as pointless as shouting at the wind.

Young people want to enjoy themselves and every summer lots of people will find the adrenaline of the leap and the refreshing plunge into the water too much of a temptation to resist.

But we publish the urge to be cautious to at least try to make them think about the dangers and take what precautions are reasonable.

The tragic case of Hussain Mohammed should remain fresh in the mind.

He couldn’t swim and drowned at Donnington Bridge last summer.

We don’t say that to criticise him but we hope that others who are unable to swim would certainly now be aware how quickly that moment of thrill can have lasting consequences.

So if you are going to enjoy the charms of nature our city and county offer do so safely and just at least check where you’re jumping and swimming before taking the plunge.

This is weather to enjoy, after all.
