AN Oxford academic and human rights lawyer who advised the United Nations and helped in the Lockerbie bombing investigation has died.

Sudanese-British Omer Yousif Elagab passed away on May 12 from a kidney disease, aged 67.

He leaves five children and widow Amani Ibrahim Mahgoub.

Dr Elagab was born on February 6, 1946, in The Sudan. His father, Yousif Elagab, was head of a chiefs’ council and co-founder of the Republican Socialist Party who sent his son to be educated in the UK.

Dr Elagab studied at Oxford and London universities and lived in Oxford.

He graduated with a BA in Law in 1977 and an LLM from London University in 1978.

In 1986, Oxford awarded him the title of Doctor of Philosophy in International Law.

Dr Elagab was involved in international legal consultations. His expertise was also sought by the UN and he wrote a report for Sir Edward Heath after the Lockerbie disaster.
