FOUR STARS

Many are familiar with the biblical tale of Joseph and, as turned into a musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd, it is a show that’s been touring for quite a while now – according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The most notable aspect of this latest incarnation is its star.

Fresh from documentary Steps: On the Road Again and a sold-out arena tour, is pop icon Ian ‘H’ Watkins playing the lead role of Joseph.

From the moment he appears on stage, flashing the audience a knowing smile, you know who the focus of attention is. To his credit, the popstar does excel at getting the crowd going. At the end of the performance Watkins had most of the audience standing up and singing along with him, but he never quite succeeds in making the role his own. That said, he puts in a good turn overall and his appearance will surely be a treat for his many fans.

Other than its celebrity star this is a production that, besides an injection of some brilliantly witty lines into the standard musical numbers, doesn’t fundamentally shake up any tried-and-tested formulas. But what is lacking in innovation is certainly made up for by impressive production values. The set pieces look great and audiences are treated to the whirling, colourful and spirited choreography that they have come expect throughout. Also not to be forgotten are the superb supporting cast, who really come into their own during the excellent renditions of the famous and well-trodden songs, with notable performances coming from Jennifer Potts as the narrator and the actors playing Joseph’s brothers.

This is a well put together show, with enough bedazzling routines and throwaway gags to satisfy children and adults alike – just don’t expect to see the reinvention of the wheel.
