FIREFIGHTERS have swapped flames for frames in a week-long bike ride to Oxford’s German twin town, Bonn.
Sixteen riders representing Oxfordshire Fire Service left Bonn Square on Friday to raise £10,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity and to promote awareness of cycle safety. They aim to join Bonn Fire and Rescue Service’s 150th anniversary tomorrow.
Dave Smith, 51, a firefighter at Rewley Road station in Oxford city centre, and a support driver for the race, said: “We had three punctures on day one but all else has gone well.”
The cyclists are also riding in memory of former colleague Joe Wilkins, 39, an Eynsham firefighter who died in a road accident near Appleton last year.
