HUNDREDS of people are expected to race through the streets and fields of Blackbird Leys on Saturday.

The Blackbird Leys Mile, which attracted more than 500 people in its heyday during the 1980s, returned last year after a 20-year absence.

Now with help from local schoolchildren and community stalwarts it is hoped the run will bring even more people together.

Stuart Craft, who coaches the IWCA Athletics Club based in Blackbird Leys, said: “We had about 200 people take part last year and are looking to more than double that if we can. We want all of Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys to come out.

“It doesn’t matter if you want to win it, or walk it, just come out and get moving.

“Over the years there have not been a lot of opportunities for youngsters from the estate to get involved in running so this is the perfect way to start.

“You’ll see mothers with pushchairs walking it, toddlers and juniors, as well as more experienced runners. It is for everyone.”

Co-organiser and veteran runner Paul Brackett, 54, started the event in the 1980s with his sports-mad family.

The Thistle Drive resident said he was delighted to see the race come back with so many people in Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys involved.

Mr Brackett said: “Even if you just want to help line the route or cheer out of your window, get involved, as this is a wonderful positive thing.”

Mr Brackett is an ultra-marathon runner, and last month took part in a gruelling 65-mile run along Hadrian’s Wall which he completed in 12 hours, 45 minutes.

He said the one-mile circuit of Blackbird Leys Park, Pegasus School field, Blackbird Leys Road, Cuddesdon Way, and back to the park, was a perfect distance for all.

He said: “This might be the thing which makes people think: “I could do 5km, or 10km now”, and really inspire people to take up running.”

The pair enlisted Pegasus School in Field Avenue, Blackbird Leys, to help.

Deputy headmaster Francis Murphy said: “The 2013 Leys Mile will be bigger and better than ever and we expect a record number of entrants.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity before the official opening of the Blackbird Academy Trust for Orchard Meadow, Pegasus and Windale School to join together for what we hope will be a great day out.”

It is free to enter. Registration is from 8.45am to 9.15am at Pegasus School.

The event starts at 9.45am for under fives and at 10am for everyone else at the Blackbird Leys Park.

The event is combined with the Pegasus School fete where there will be refreshments and presentation of medals.
