A CHAIR inspired by a teenager’s love for The Beano comic has won a national furniture design competition.
Josh Simms, 14, from Witney, was the overall winner of the Make It! schools awards, beating thousands of pupils from 600 schools.
He was among several winners from Henry Box School.
Harry Swift, 14, won the key stage three wood category with Billy Monahon runner-up.
Tom Peacock and Lucy Broad were runners-up in the key stage three eco-furniture category.
Ryan Lewis and Amy Hunter were runners-up in the key stage four eco-furniture competition.
Chris Hempstead was runner-up in the key stage five eco-furniture contest, while design and technology teacher Nick O’Callaghan was named best teacher.
Josh said: “All the children I know are quite interested in comics.
“I thought red and black stripes would look good on a chair and I just put it together.”
Josh won a practical upholstering book, a tool prize pack, a £25 iTunes voucher, a £20 cheque and a visit to New Holland in Lincolnshire, the largest privately owned dock and timber imports facility in the UK.
