I HAVE to agree with Mr Derrick Holt’s views about GM food (Oxford Mail, June 28).

He is absolutely right in saying that mankind has been inventive, creative and continually improving technology – which brings me to the almost unbelievable situation that this country is in danger of not being able to generate enough electrical power to keep the lights on, let alone run the highly sophisticated society we all take for granted.

This revelation comes hard on the heels of the closure of power generation by a perfectly functioning power station at Didcot. If we have to comply with the “green lobby” and stop using fossil fuel, then we should embrace the technology of nuclear power generation, as it is nonsense to think that windmills can generate enough electrical power to service a country of 60 million people.

However, successive Governments have abandoned the engineering expertise we once had.

We cannot ‘dis-invent’ nuclear power generation, but, with good governance and regulation, we should embrace the technology of this limitless source of energy and governments should do everything they can to get back the engineering expertise we used to have.
