PUPILS at Berinsfield Primary School can look forward to a new name, logo and uniform when they return after the summer break.

The school, near Wallingford, is currently in special measures and being led by “superhead” Martin Lester. It is to become CfBT Education Trust’s second Oxfordshire academy after Oxford Spires.

From September 1, the 200-pupil school will be known as Abbey Woods Academy, and children will come to school in new, red sweatshirts or cardigans emblazoned with a logo of three trees and a local war memorial, designed by Year 5 pupil Alice Bainbridge.

While many county schools have converted to academy status, most have kept the same name or simply added the word ‘academy’ to their existing title.

Exceptions include the three schools which changed under the original Labour programme, Peers School which became Oxford Academy, Oxford School which became Oxford Spires Academy, and Drayton School which became North Oxfordshire Academy.

Mr Lester, who will leave the school when it changes status, to take up an interim post at Rose Hill Primary School, said: “It is definitely to do with a new start under a different organisation.

“When we showed the children the logo they were very excited.”

Kelly Gould, currently head at Hillside Primary School, Berkshire, has been appointed interim headteacher for September.

She will be there for the academic year, while the trust seeks a permanent head for September 2014.

CfBT held consultations about the changes, and 123 responses were received on the name of the school and 52 on uniform changes.

About 70 children entered a competition to design the new logo.

The name comes from the village’s first school, Abbey School.

Alice, nine, from Berinsfield, said: “The three trees idea on my design came from the name ‘Abbey Woods Academy’ and the propeller from the history of Berinsfield.

“I was amazed when my name was called out and really pleased my design won.”
