Sir – It is wonderful to see a young man at Cherwell School promoting the use of cycles.
It might help beleaguered pedestrians in Summertown, however, if he includes basic law and consideration in his programme, including how to stop at traffic lights on red and why it is against the law to ride a cycle on a pavement.
The pavements in Summertown are a no-go area for pedestrians twice a day with Cherwell students ignoring cycle lanes, traffic lights etc and riding sometimes two and three abreast on pavements in Marston Road and on Banbury Road.
I have pleaded with the Chief Constable, councillor Jean Fooks and MP Nicola Blackwood to get some action to stop this. All three came up with bland replies and no action. The cycle, it appears, is king — even on the pavements designed for pedestrians.
In the meantime, we get copious reports from the police on how they are fining motorists under the Road Traffic Act. But that Act also refers to cyclists.
In view of the fact that the authorities are turning a blind eye to the danger to pedestrians, can any of your readers suggest a solution?
Eddie Duller, Summertown
