A FORMER USAF base at Upper Heyford was the setting for a new 10km race this weekend.

Things got off to an unexpected start at the 10k Airbase Race when two-year-old Caleb Lynchsmith rode his balance bike out in front of runners as they set off, before his father, Duncan, got him out of harm’s way.

In total 148 people took part in the run, which raised money for the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance and Oxfordshire Playbus.

Josh Ridley of Witney Roadrunners was the first to cross the finish line in just over 34 minutes.

It was the first such event but organisers are hoping to make it an annual run.
