ROBERT Baden-Powell, founded of the Scout movement, made his first visit to Oxford as Chief Scout on February, 17 1910 to present proficiency badges and awards to some of the 300 Scouts assembled in the Corn Exchange in George Street.

Local Scout leaders planned a guard of honour to welcome him – boys were told that if it was wet, they should bring their overcoats.

In the event, the guard of honour did not happen after Scout headquarters ruled that such a tribute was against the rules.
