ORGANISERS of an Oxford college ball which went wrong have apologised to the 1,000 people who attended.

The ball, organised by Jesus College and Somerville College, was supposed to be a “last night of decadence, debauchery, and indulgence” but instead the event was marked by tears, bruises and maze staff “going rogue”.

It was held on Saturday, May 4, at Somerville College – which was attended by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher – but has since been condemned by the guests who paid up to £150 to attend.

Some of them complained of burnt skin and dresses caused by the hog roast – which was the only food supplied, meaning vegetarians had barely anything to eat.

One guest said they suffered from bruises as they struggled to get a pork roll before they ran out.

An indoor maze had also been constructed, but this too attracted criticism after guests said they suffered injuries while using it – something the organisers blame on “maze staff going rogue”.

Some members of the committee of students behind the ball have now written an open letter saying they failed to “manage expectations” and suffered from a lack of experience.

Plans to display a shark at the ball were scrapped last month because Somerville College bosses expressed concerns about having the animal on show.

Thames Valley Police said it was not called to the ball and the Health and Safety Executive said it had not been involved.
