Sir – Nice to see Mr Hugh Jones’ letter (May 9). One would have thought that he would have remembered that we had a referendum regarding proportional representation only a short while ago and the vast majority of the public voted against it.
The voice of the people was heard and acted upon — accept it. This is called democracy. You know where the second part of your party’s name derives from. It could be that your interpretation is “you keep voting until you get it right”.
Could this be the same Liberal Democrats, who threw a tantrum and refused to back boundary changes so that everyone’s vote would be equal and thus, kept a system, where in some constituencies a vote can be worth double that of someone in another constituency?
Is this also the same party which refuses to let the public have a vote on EU membership?
Doesn’t democracy mean “the will of the people”? Obviously not if you are Liberal. The Liberals seem to have taken the name but not the meaning.
Do you believe in democracy or not, or only those bits that suit you? Please tell us.
