A FELLOW at Oxford’s Green Templeton College, who was the founding professor of physics at the Open University, has died aged 82.

Professor Gerald Elliott’s main research was biophysics, particularly the study of the molecular structure and physical mechanisms in the eye.

He joined the Open University in 1969 after a period working in the US.

He moved to Oxford in 1974 to carry out research into electrostatic interactions between muscle filaments.

He retired from the Open University in 1996 and joined what is now Green Templeton College, becoming a fellow in 2007.

Prof Elliott was born on January 26, 1931 in Eltham in London. He first came to Oxford in 1951 to study physics after National Service in the Royal Engineers. He then studied for a PhD in London, before moving to the US.

He stood for Parliament in 1964, 1966 and 1970 as the Labour candidate in Croydon North East.

He died on March 6. He is survived by his second wife Dr Katalin Pinter, with whom he lived with in Kingston Road, his sons from his first marriage, Austin and Gavin, and five grandchildren.

His funeral was held on March 25 at Oxford Crematorium.
