POST mortem tests carried out on a man who died following a botched raid at an Oxford jewellers are inconclusive, police say.

Suspected robber Clint Townsend, 33, stopped breathing after he was apprehended by staff and members of the public in Oxford’s Covered Market on Saturday morning.

He and an alleged accomplice had tried to smash through a window at John Gowing Jewellers before being caught.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Hill said: “At the moment there have been no arrests with regard to the death of Clint Townsend. This will depend on the final outcome of the post mortem.

“More tests have to be carried out.”

Mr Townsend died at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital on Sunday.

His accomplice fled the Covered Market empty handed via Turl Street.

It is believed he escaped on a bus to St Clements after dumping clothes and a helmet.

Two men, aged 30 and 31, were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of robbery and were both bailed until May 16.

Police would still like to speak to anyone with information about the incident.
