YOUNG readers at Oxford railway station were handed free books to keep them entertained on train journeys.

More than 5,000 children’s books were given away by First Great Western and publisher Igloo Books to mark International Children’s Book Day yesterday.

The books were available to FGW customers at a number of stations across the network, including Oxford, Newbury, Swindon, Bristol and Bath.

Juli Muldoon, nine, on holiday from West Virginia, USA, were among hundreds of children who were given books at Oxford railway station.

Juli said: “It was a nice surprise and we read the books on the train back to London.”

Ms Dylag added: “All of us who have children know just how hard it can be to keep them occupied when they have to sit on a train for a while. We hope these books can help that.”

Since 1967, International Children’s Book Day has been celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to focus attention on children’s books.
