TWO men arrested following the raid on a jeweller's that left one man dead have been released on police bail.

The pair, aged 32 and 31, were arrested after Clint Townsend and an accomplice tried to smash through a window at John Gowing Jewellers in Oxford's Covered Market on Saturday morning.

Townsend, 33, stopped breathing after he was apprehended by staff and members of the public.

He died in Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital on Sunday.

The second man fled the Covered Market via Turl Street. It is believed he made good his escape on a bus to St Clements.

Detectives arrested two men on suspicion of robbery yesterday afternoon. They have been released tonight while enquiries continue.

A post mortem examination on Townsend will be held to determine what killed him.

Anyone with information on the robbery can call Detective Sergeant Matt Jarman on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
