COUNTY councillors will be asked to push road repair contractors to meet their obligations so highways are “fit for the public”.

Liberal Democrat councillor Anne Purse has put the motion to the Conservative-led Oxfordshire County Council for discussion today.

The motion says there is “great concern” about the time taken to repair “dangerous” potholes and the standard of the repairs once they have been done.

It says: “People are damaging their vehicles, motorcycles and cycles on our roads, but find it hard to get recompense since it is impossible to prove which pothole was reported when in a situation where many roads have repeated holes and repeated repairs.

“This council calls upon the cabinet to require our contractors to meet their obligation on highways repairs and so ensure our roads are fit for the public to travel on.”

In January the Oxford Mail revealed the number of potholes repaired in Oxfordshire has more than trebled in five years.

The news came just weeks after transport bosses announced plans to cut more than £1m from the road maintenance budget.

In 2008/09, Oxfordshire County Council repaired 8,902 potholes, rising to a predicted 32,000 potholes in 2012/13. The council has since introduced new online pothole reporting, added a further £250,000 to the repairs budget and doubled the number of repairmen last month.
