CHILDREN learned all about Jesus and his disciples by visiting a Cowley churchyard.

The 45 St Christopher’s School pupils from years five and six were re-enacting the last days of the Messiah in an outdoor Easter experience at St James’ Church.

By a burning brazier, they learnt how Peter denied Jesus beside the fire, then in another part of the churchyard, three crosses were set up and the children learnt about the crucifixion.

Finally, turning a corner they found an empty tomb where they learnt about the resurrection.

The Rev Howard Thornton, who devised the tour, said: “Words are great – I like words – but when you have heard a story a lot of times it doesn’t mean as much to you any more.

“Or if it is the first time you are hearing it and you are in a Cowley churchyard, hopefully it will be easier to relate to. The kids all had great questions and got caught up in the story.”

After their visit they were given sunflower seeds and little flower pots to take home and plant.
