A group set up to provide support and advice on breastfeeding to mums in Barton is going mobile thanks to a £55,000 award from the People's Millions draw.

The BabyCafe, based at the Roundabout Centre in Waynflete Road, is using the money to revamp a former Oxford Bus Company bus which will then be used to take the cafe to different areas of the city. The bus seating will be removed and the interior given a cosy new look.

The group currently meets once a week, but the aim is to get the bus out and about on at least three more days.

BabyCafe manager Maggie Smith said the money meant the service could now be taken to areas where people could not get support for breast feeding.

She said: "It's fantastic news. Everyone is really pleased we got the Lottery award.

"The aim is to give mums help and to talk about whether what they are doing is right and feels right. There are certain types of equipment they can have to continue to breastfeed if they are having difficulties. It's about supporting them through their difficulties."

It is hoped the service - thought to be the first in the country - will be up and running early in the new year.

Camille Kalaja, a peer support volunteer for the group and a mother of two young children, said there was a real demand for the service.

She said: "Breastfeeding can be very lonely and most of the time you are looking after the children and you don't have time to look after yourself. It is a place to get a cup of coffee and advice on things like how to attach the baby to the breast, as well as medical advice."

The group was awarded a cheque for £55,000 after members of the public voted for it more worthy than other competing projects.
