Oxford High School romped to victory in a literature quiz in Abingdon - and the team is now hoping to win a trip to New Zealand.

It was one of 19 schools from Oxfordshire and Berkshire to take part in the Kids' Lit Quiz - open to children aged between 12 and 13 - at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis centre on Tuesday.

The team from the private girls' school - consisting of Jennifer Collister, Tamara Stojanovic, Kate Birbeck and Melissa Hamill - finished the three-hour quiz marathon well clear of the 32-team field with 86-and-a-half points.

The girls will head to Newcastle next month to compete against 16 teams in the UK final - and victory would see them fly to New Zealand to represent England in the World Kids' Lit Quiz Final.

Cherwell School, in Oxford, won the UK final in 2004 - but lost out to the New Zealand team in the world final.

This was the second consecutive year Oxford High School has got to the final - last year's team finished fourth.

This is the fourth year that the quiz has been staged in the UK by Prof Wayne Mills, a senior lecturer at Auckland University, New Zealand.

Organiser Jacky Atkinson said: "This is a popular quiz that attracts interest from children and famous authors.

"It is entirely self-financing and we need help to ensure the competition continues."

The Abingdon event was sponsored by Serco Aerospace from Benson.

Oxford University Press provided book prizes and Oxford author Philip Pullman is funding the final in Newcastle.
