A shopkeeper whose business has been repeatedly vandalised over the last year is furious Oxford City Council has still not put up a CCTV camera on the estate.

Najibul Hoque, who owns Crown Curry takeaway in Atkyns Road, Wood Farm, has had his front window smashed four times in the past six months - the latest damage caused by fireworks just last week.

In April the council agreed to install a CCTV camera at the shopping parade, as well as one at Forrester's Tower.

But six months on, there is no sign of either camera.

Mr Hoque said: "It's very distressing. I am getting trouble here every night and it's scaring customers away.

"Some nights I get 10 to 15 youngsters coming into the shop causing trouble and it has become difficult to keep hold of staff.

"It's so frustrating that the camera has still not been put up. Our lives have been made a misery. I just don't understand why this has taken so long."

Gaby Dix, who runs Wood Farm Co-op, said: "It's a bit strange that they have not bothered to get around to doing this and yet bus shelters on the estate have been refurbished.

"Surely people's safety and catching criminals has to be the most important thing?"

Wood Farm city councillor Joe McManners said he had asked in June when the system would be installed.

He said he was told the delay was due to problems with linking up with a system due to go up in Rose Hill.

He was then told it would be up by the end of November, but now the council says the camera will not be in place until the new year.

Mr McManners said: "There was criminal damage and antisocial behaviour in September, which I believe would have been reduced if the CCTV was up and going.

"Antisocial behaviour continues and there is no sign of the measures.

"My main concern is for the shops.

"If people are put off going to them they will go out of business, which would be terrible for the area."

The council's neighbourhood services manager, Steve Kilsby, said: "I'd like to apologise to the residents in the Wood Farm area for the delay in providing CCTV at the shops in Atkyns Road.

"There have been some logistical difficulties involving the link to the police station. We have also become concerned about value for money.

"We need to ensure we provide a robust CCTV system for the area but also one that provides value for money for the city's council tax payers.

"We are working hard to resolve this situation."
