Sir – Councillor Rodney Rose is quoted (Report, January 24) as saying that he could not get excited about the apparent waste of £6,000 at Ardley out of a £1bn budget.

He may not be excited but, as a member of Kennington Parish Council, it certainly concerns me. On several occasions, councillor Rose has been invited to inspect the Third World roads that are Kennington Road and (more particularly) The Avenue through Kennington village.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, he has so far been unable to meet representatives of the council to walk the village with us. Had he done so, he would have seen a road with, in places, more potholes than tarmac.

This is a very busy road with a daily traffic flow of 7,000 vehicles, including eight buses per hour.

Oxfordshire highways have given us a vague promise that some of the road may be resurfaced in the next two years, but what parts and when is anybody’s guess. Perhaps if councillor Rose got a bit more excited about wasted £6,000s, there would be money in his budget to do the essentials rather than stupid schemes like those in Ardley.
