I COMMEND Keith Brookes on his letter (Viewpoints, February 12) highlighting the necessity to reinstate dredging our waterways.

It would definitely help the movement of water and improve drainage.

The Oxford Mail (February 8) revealed that the Government is to release funding of £2.483m to protect 358 homes in Northway and Marston.

Who proposed the amount of cash available and the (very modest) number of homes under threat?

This suggested funding is ridiculous, a mere drop in the ocean of what is really required.

It is not enough money to provide the necessary drainage required now.

The problem will be increased when the Barton build starts.

The Government and council need to stop, and not try to hoodwink Oxford residents.

They must treat this problem seriously and put more funding to create more robust long-lasting solutions.

This must include money from the Barton building developers to provide extensive drain pipework to successfully deal with excess rain water, sewage and waste water.

This in place will help to stop the erosion of land, roads, housing, schools and the like which are below the proposed Barton build.

This needs to happen before any building starts.
