Sir – Last Friday, at about 7.30pm I drove from Cowley to Marston via the Cowley Road and returned by the same route before 8pm.
During the course of that short journey I was able to record at least 12 cars with one headlight not working and two cars without alternative sidelamps where the headlamp was not working.
One of the cars was a taxi/hire car!
There is an occasional blitz in the autumn by the police to remind students and other cyclists that bicycles are not exempt from carrying working lights to front and rear, for their own safety, during the hours of darkness but why can’t motorists see the sense that two working headlamps are not only required by law but also in their interests to be seen by other motorists and pedestrians. It doesn’t cost the earth to be safe and be seen. Try to prevent accidents.
