THERE can be few things in life more terrifying than being savaged by a dangerous dog.

You only have to look at the pictures with today’s front page story – and we can’t print the worst as they are too graphic – to see what damage they can do.

Sushil Giddy and Ken Deadman should be commended for their bravery in trying to help one of their neighbours during what sounds like a horrific incident in Barton. Mrs Giddy in particular may be scarred for life as a result, such was the severity of the attack.

Accusations are inevitably made at the dogs’ owners when incidents like this occur, because sadly they occur all too often.

Pitbull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers and others of their kind are powerful creatures, and need to be treated accordingly.

It’s fair to say these types of dog tend to appeal to a certain breed of owner.

Their reputations as fearsome animals are seen as a badge of honour.

Any dog owner has a responsibility to keep them under control – particularly if they are capable of this kind of incident.

Keep them on a leash, tie them up at home or muzzle them if need be – we all know what happens if they’re not.
